Substitute Teacher Accused Of Sexual Contact With Student In Edgewater

EDGEWATER, Colo. (CBS4) - The Jefferson County District Attorney's Office announced Monday that a substitute teacher at an Edgewater elementary school has been arrested on suspicion of unlawful sexual contact of a student at the school.

Vincente Vitela, 46, was working as a substitute teacher at Lumberg Elementary School on Feb. 15 and 16 when several students reported concerns to staff.

Sixth-grade students reported to school staff that Vitela was making them feel uncomfortable by touching them and smelling their hair, according to court records.

"One student said that Vitela had rubbed the front of his body against the back of her body while she was at the white board doing an assignment," the district attorney's office said in a statement. "Staff promptly asked Vitela to leave and terminated his substitute assignment."

Investigators learned that Vitela is also currently self-employed as a tutor and offers services out of his home.

Vitela was arrested on Saturday at his home in Denver. He appeared in court Monday morning and his bond was set at $25,000.

Vitela's will be advised of any charges on March 2.

Anyone with more information is asked to contact Edgewater Police Detective Shawna Naumann at (303) 235-0500.
