Written by Brooke Wagner DENVER (CBS4) – In the last couple of weeks it seems the same word has been on everyone’s lips — Pinterest. Started a couple of years ago by a former Google employee, Pinterest.com has exploded in popularity.

Just last month Pinterest had 11 million new visitors, and according to the Wall Street Journal, the site has grown 10-fold in 6 months. So, what the heck is it?

Pinterest is kind of like a virtual bulletin board. Once you’re a member, you can “pin” items of interest to your board. Membership is free, but you have to request an invite (just go to the www.pinterest.com homepage). Colorful pictures of everything from craft projects to backyard renovations to nail polish span the site. When you like a picture, you can click on it to read more and see more like it. Then you can even link it to your Facebook page so your friends can pin it as well.

Who are all the people flocking to Pinterest? You name it — couples planning a wedding, cooking enthusiasts, crafty types, fashionistas, gardeners — and they have one thing in common. They want to share ideas and save money doing things themselves.

CBS4 Producer Theresa Mueller introduced me to Pinterest. She said she joined to get ideas for her brother’s wedding.

“A lot of my friends are starting off with houses or small apartments, and you don’t have that much money to decorate or furnish everything, so there are really great ways to build something and still save money, which is nice,” Mueller said.

Mueller found all kinds of ways to save on clothing, do it yourself projects, recipes, and party planning. Before last month I’d never even heard of Pinterest, but I have a feeling I haven’t heard the last of it! Are you on Pinterest? Let me know what you think of it in Comments or Twitter.
