Person Survives After Getting Trapped Under Concrete In Brighton
BRIGHTON, Colo. (CBS4) - Firefighters in Brighton rushed to help a person trapped under a pile of debris Saturday afternoon.
Around 1:30 p.m. firefighters were called out to an area along the South Platte River near the Brighton quarry located at Highway 85 and 144th Avenue.
It took rescue crews a couple hours to clear concrete away so they were able to reach the person. He suffered only bumps and bruises.
The rescue warranted a huge response from the Brighton Fire Department because of the area where it happened. The terrain was so difficult to navigate that rescue crews had to use smaller trucks to get to the area where the person was trapped. They also had to break down equipment from the larger trucks.
The person was trapped under concrete slabs that weigh several thousand pounds. Since they were so heavy it took rescue crews a long time to get him free. He was taken to an area hospital by a medical helicopter.
"I didn't actually get back to see it, but the rescuers said that there were just large pieces of concrete that they were building up into a cave, or something," a firefighter told CBS4. "Pieces of that collapsed down on top of him."
Rescuers said they believe the collapse was caused by digging by what sounded like teenagers under the concrete.
The person has been listed in fair condition.
