Judge Mulls Bond For Colorado Terrorist Suspect

DENVER (AP) -- A U.S. magistrate judge is considering whether to release a Uzbek refugee on bail pending his trial on a charge of providing or attempting to provide material support to a terrorist organization.

Judge Michael Hegarty Wednesday is considering defense arguments that emails and phone calls secretly gathered through wiretapping and other electronic monitoring should not be used to hold 35-year-old Jamshid Muhtorov of Aurora without bail.

Federal prosecutors argued Tuesday that Muhtorov is a danger to the community and a flight risk, saying the disaffected former human rights worker bought a one-way ticket to Turkey as part of his effort to support the Islamic Jihad Union. His defense counters that his actions were taken out of context and Muhtorov had planned to visit family in the region.
