Lack Of Fire Hydrants Hurt Efforts To Save Structures In Douglas County

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) - Two structures were destroyed in two separate rural fires that happened early Sunday morning.

The first was a home on Ruby Lane in Douglas County. No one was home at the time of the fire so it burned for a couple of hours before firefighters in the area got a call. When they arrived the home was engulfed in flames.

Firefighters saved five dogs as they worked for more than 2 hours to put it out.

A second rural fire happened in Arapahoe County just before 5 a.m. A barn was destroyed by fire before firefighters even had a chance to put it out.

"We don't have hydrants so we had to shuttle all of the water to the scene to fight the fire, so it took probably about 2 1/2 hours to bring the fire under control," Dave Woodrick with the Franktown Fire Protection District said.

The cause of both fires is still under investigation. Firefighters suspect the barn fire may have been an electrical fire.
