State Lawmaker Suspended From Post After Traffic Citation

DENVER (CBS4)- State Rep. Laura Bradford has been suspended from her post as chairman of the House Local Government Committee after a traffic stop.

Bradford, a Republican representing Grand Junction, was pulled over the evening of Jan. 25 in the area of Colfax Avenue and Downing Street for an improper turn or lane change. Bradford had legislative license plates on her car.

Bradford admitted to the officer that she had been at a function that evening. The officer smelled alcohol and conducted a roadside sobriety test. An actual sobriety test, breathalizer or blood test, was not performed.

The officer called a police supervisor to the scene. Bradford was written a ticket for an improper lane change. She was not detained under a law that states lawmakers cannot be arrested, except for treason or felony, in going to or returning from legislative sessions or any other official legislative business.

Bradford left her car parked at the stop and left in a cab.

Bradford was suspended from her post as chairman of the House Local Government Committee on Friday.

Rep. Libby Szabo, a Republican from Arvada, will serve as chair of House Local Government and Rep. David Balmer, a Republican from Centennial, will serve as the committee's vice chair.
