Breckenridge Lawyer Makes First Colorado Court Appearance

BRECKENRIDGE, Colo. (CBS4) - Many suspected he'd never been seen again, but on Thursday morning Royal "Scoop" Daniel faced a judge in Summit County.

The prominent attorney went missing four years ago, and it's believed he took more than $500,000 with him. He was captured by border patrol agents in San Diego on Dec. 7.

Daniel walked into the courtroom quietly in a white and black jump suit with his hands and ankles both cuffed. His public defender Reed Ownes did all the talking during a short advisement hearing.

Ownes mentioned he is going to seek a reduction in bond, hoping to lower it to $150,000.

District Attorney Mark Hurlbert asked the judge to transfer the case from county court to district court.

"Which means things happen faster, faster for the victims, faster for the defendants, and hopefully we can get justice a lot quicker," Hurlbert told CBS4.

Hurlbert said more of the people Daniel allegedly took money from have come forward since Daniel was caught. That means more charges could be filed in the case.

Daniel was disbarred in 2008, a few months after criminal charges were filed against him.
