Lincoln High Track Coach Arrested On Sex Assault Charge

DENVER (CBS4) - Denver police have arrested a high school coach who is accused of sexually assaulting a child.

Police arrested Oscar Ponce, 34, on Tuesday night on charges of sex assault on a child by a person in a position of trust.

Ponce coaches track and is also a full time counselor at Abraham Lincoln High School. He has been placed on leave during the investigation.

Students told CBS4 they were surprised to learn of the arrest.

"I think it's crazy. I didn't expect that for him," one student told CBS4. "He did a lot for the school and for the track team and it's gone to waste now."

Police said there is a possibility there could be more than one victim in the case.

The Daily Camera in Boulder reports Ponce was an award-winning distance runner at the University of Colorado in the late 1990s.

Ponce previously coached at Denver's North High School.
