Wanted Lawyer Arrives Back In Summit County, Booked Into Jail

BRECKENRIDGE, Colo. (CBS4) - A well-respected lawyer accused of stealing more than $500,000 dollars from his clients is back in Colorado.

Royal "Scoop" Daniel vanished from Breckenridge 4 1/2 years ago and was arrested last week as he tried to cross into California from Mexico. He was booked into the jail in Breckenridge early Tuesday after being extradited from San Diego.

Daniel has an advisory hearing at the Summit County Justice Center on Thursday. That will be the first time he's been seen in Colorado since he disappeared in April of 2007.

Daniel was booked into the Summit County Jail just after midnight. Two deputies flew to San Diego Monday to bring him back. That cost the county about $2,000. It's a small price compared to the almost $1 million Daniel is alleged to have stolen from his clients through shady real estate transactions.

The day Daniel vanished both his secretary and girlfriend reported him missing, and his cell phone had called 911 for a brief time. But then his shady financial dealings were discovered by investigators.

Daniel told Breckenridge police he's been in Mexico for the past 4 years before he tried to walk across the border last week.

At the hearing on Thursday he'll be read his charges, which include felony theft.

Daniel told an investigator he wasn't aware he was wanted.
