Teen Rescued After Falling Through Ice At Erie Lake

ERIE, Colo. (CBS4) - A teenager was pulled from freezing water after falling through ice Sunday afternoon.

The incident happened at about noon at Erie Lake.

A 14-year-old boy had been walking with his friend on what he thought was solid ground. It turned out to be snow and ice. The ground gave way and the teen fell into the water. He was able to get to the edge of the lake until rescuers arrived.

"You always have to be careful this time of the year with currents and waterways. You can never tell exactly just how thick the ice is," said Shad Bennet, Mountain View Fire Battalion Chief.

Firefighters say the teenager's friend did the right thing by calling for help instead of jumping into the frigid water and trying to rescue him.

The teenager was taken to the hospital.
