District Attorney Drawing Link To 1 Suspect In Sonny's Rocks Robbery

DENVER (CBS4)- Authorities are starting to make connections between two people arrested in Utah and the Sonny's Rocks robbery suspects.

Two people dressed as clowns robbed the Denver jewelry store in August. They stormed the store with weapons and held employees at gunpoint.

"It's scary. Anybody that comes in with a gun is serious," said Sonny's Rocks owner Michael Nedler.

Surveillance video shows the two robbery suspects dressed in white makeup and wigs with guns ordering employees to the ground. They stole more than $400,000 worth of jewelry.

"They made it very clear if we didn't follow instructions, they'd kill us," said Nedler.

One month after the robbery, police in Utah arrested Vincent Matthews, 21, and Ronette Hatch, 22, after they discovered what appeared to be a large cache of stolen jewelry in the trunk of their car.

The mug shot of Matthews bears a strong resemblance to one of the men caught on tape.

Denver District Attorney spokeswoman Lynn Kimbrough said Hatch was not involved in the robbery. But Matthews may be a different story.

"We're fairly certain at least one of these folks could not have been part of the robbery," said Kimbrough. "It's possible."

Matthews and Hatch have been charged with theft by receiving. They've been extradited back to Colorado and are being held in the Denver County Jail.
