Hutto Chosen Police Chief For Fort Collins

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) - An assistant chief of police in Austin, Texas, has been named the new police chief for Fort Collins.

John Hutto replaces Dennis Harrison, who resigned in April after 14 years as police chief for Fort Collins. The Coloradoan reports Harrison is a finalist to be the police chief in Castle Rock.

City Manager Darin Atteberry had said earlier this month that he was deciding between Hutto and Ron Burns to replace Harrison. Burns is a former police chief for Tempe, Ariz.

Atteberry tells the Coloradoan Hutto is expected start work Dec. 1. He will earn a salary of $153,500 a year.

Hutto has spent his entire career with the Austin police department, working his way up from an officer in 1986 to assistant chief last year.
