Venetucci Farm Using Sun For More Than Crops

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) -- A farm owned by the Pikes Peak Community Foundation is using the sun for something more than crops.

Venetucci Farm plans to add 2,500 solar panels to create a community solar garden whose power can be used by Colorado Springs Utilities customers.

The foundation says the company SunShare will install, own and operate the solar garden. The Gazette reports SunShare hopes to have the panels up and running by early December.

Colorado Springs Utilities customers can sign up to lease two panels for 20 years for $1,100. Subscribing customers can get a 9-cent per kilowatt hour credit on their monthly electric bills for their share of the power generated at the solar garden.

So far, more than 600 panels have been reserved.
