Inmates Caught With Homemade Weapons

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (CBS4) - Five inmates at the Larimer County Jail now face additional charges after deputies caught them with makeshift weapons.

The inmates had been moved into a gym where there was less supervision so a maintenance project could be carried out.

That's where they got their hands on a metal clock cover.

"They were industrious and took this metal," said Nick Christensen, a spokesman for the Larimer County Sheriff's Office.

"Later we discovered them in one of the outdoor recreation areas. One of our corporals who was very vigilant and heard some scrapping noises and observed them sharpening these pieces of metal into weapons of a sort."

When the deputy caught the inmates, they had already sharpened two makeshift spikes and had the material to make two more.

All five are now in a higher-security part of the jail and each faces a a new felony charge of introducing contraband.
