THORNTON, Colo. (CBS4) - Thornton police say a motorcycle officer who was hit by a car on Interstate 25 faces a very long recovery.

The officer had pulled over a driver for speeding near Thornton Parkway Saturday morning when an SUV ran into him. I-25 was shut down for about four hours.

The officer's name hasn't been released. He is now in serious but stable condition with internal injuries and broken bones.

"It's a shame. It's sad, anyone being hurt like that when you're seeing clothes in the middle of the road. It's horrible," witness Jeremy Garcia said.

Police suspect the driver of the SUV, identified as Fernando Malagon, was under the influence of drugs and alcohol. He's now facing vehicular assault and DUI charges.
