Colorado Has 4 Recession 'Resistant' Industries

DENVER(CBS4) - With unemployment at 8.5 percent in Colorado, knowing the right places to apply can make all the difference in a successful job search.

There are industries hiring. CBS4 money saver Suzanne McCarroll found four recession resistant industries all with jobs available and one is particularly sweet.

Hammond Candy in Denver distributes its products throughout the world. Andrew Schuman runs the factory and said the company is hiring for positions from candy chef to sales to administration.

"We train our cooks, it's artisan," Schuman said. "They come in raw, they may have been a cook somewhere else but it's a different process."

Demand for candy remains strong even in recessions because it's seen as an affordable luxury.

Liquor is another product people continue to buy during recessions.

"We're absolutely still hiring," Scott Blauweiss with Mr. B's Wine and Spirits said. "We've been open two years now and we're growing as a business."

The jobs include clerks, distributors and sommeliers.

Both Hammond's and the liquor industry offer discounts to employees.

It's not a popular topic but the funeral industry is still strong. Every funeral home CBS4 contacted had jobs available. Some required experience but others were entry level positions.

The health care industry is also thriving. That's especially true for the home health care industry where there is a large demand for nurses and aides.

Graduates from the Denver School of Nursing can get starting salaries between $45,000 and $60,000 a year.
