Dogs Found Dead In Backyard May Have Been Poisoned

FIRESTONE, Colo. (CBS4) - Police in Firestone are trying to figure out what killed two dogs in their own backyard.

Kyra and Dozer Boy were found dead in the yard of their home last week.

Tesla and Travis Dougherty, the owners, told CBS4 the pets were outside for only 20 minutes before they suddenly died. Tesla said she had let the dogs out in the backyard, and when she came back out and called for them to come in, they never came. Instead she found their lifeless bodies lying in the yard.

After two tests, it was discovered that both dogs had meat in their esophogus. That meat is now being tested for possible poisoning at a Texas A&M laboratory.

The Doughertys say that whatever was in the meat was so toxic that the dogs died before it reached their stomachs.

"I'm angry about it. I want to do something about it but I feel helpless that I can't," Tesla said.

The department says they have identified a person of interest in the case.

The Firestone Police Department's Facebook page has been flooded with comments about the case, and some say they know "who" that person of interest is. Their identity has not yet been released by officials.

In the meantime, the Doughertys say they hope to bring a new dog into their family soon.
