'Cancer Fit' Is A 1-Of-A-Kind Exercise Class For Patients

DENVER (CBS4) - Step Up For Cancer is on Sunday. The annual fundraiser at Dick's Sporting Goods Park raises money for dozens of cancer related causes, including groups like "Cancer Fit."

Cancer Fit is a one-of-a-kind exercise class for people battling cancer. One class is offered at the Peak Community and Wellness Center in Littleton. Between stretches there is sharing about battles with cancer.

Dianna Morgan and Dickie Pierson have been through a lot together. Morgan was once an Olympic hopeful before her body was decimated by a brain tumor.

"Honestly, when I started the program I didn't think that I'd live that long," Morgan said. "Exercise is the only way I've ever known how to fight back in my life against the tough times."

Morgan shares a special bond with Pierson, who battled breast cancer three years ago and never thought she would be exercising next to athletes. In fact, she never saw herself exercising at all.

"I can't say it's my favorite thing in the world, but I'm doing it and I'm doing it good and I'm improving thanks to Sandy," Pierson said.

"I'm their motivator, that's my job," said Sandy Dickman.

Dickman gives cancer patients and survivors a personalized exercise prescription.

"I know that just sometimes for them to get there is one of the hardest things," Dickman said.

Exercise is the outlet to transform their bodies, but it's the relationships that have such a lasting impact.

"You meet somebody for the first time, you feel like you've known them all your life. It's so comforting, it's so uplifting, and it's really just a wonderful relationship," Pierson said.

CBS4 is a proud sponsor of this year's Step Up For Cancer event Sunday, Aug. 7 at Dick's Sporting Goods Park. Cancer Fit is one of the organizations that benefits from the  funds raised at Step Up for Cancer. Cancer Fit is an exercise class specially tailored for cancer patients and cancer survivors.
