Postal Worker Says Dog Killed By Officer Was 'Snarling, Biting'

EDGEWATER, Colo. (CBS4) - A postal worker who got cornered by several dogs before a police officer shot and killed one of them says he was very scared during the incident.

It happened on Monday afternoon in an Edgewater neighborhood near 24th and Newland.

Brian Bogle told CBS4 Tuesday that two of the dogs broke through a screen door and pinned him on a nearby porch.

"I looked back and I saw the rottweiler and the pit bull halfway hanging out the window," he said. "As soon as I saw that and I heard the nails scratch from them jumping out the window, I started running."

There was so much confusion that the 911 operator couldn't hear Bogle over the barking dogs after he called for help.

"There's something in the background that's louder than you," the operator is heard saying during the call, which was obtained by CBS4.

"It's a dog," Bogle said.

"Are you being attacked by a dog?" the operator said.

"Yes I am. ... He's right here in my face. I cannot move."

An Edgewater police officer responded and one of those dogs wound up biting him. The officer then shot and killed the animal.

"(The officer) took his hand and shoved the head of the dog away and that's when he shot the dog," Bogle said.

The owner is now facing charges for having an aggressive dog.

Bogle said he has had issues around the home the dogs came from before.

"For the past six or seven months I've had to watch my back because I know the dogs are there," he said on Tuesday.

As a way to protect himself during Monday's attack Bogle says he shoved mail in the mouth of one of the dog in an effort to get it not to bite him.

"He was snapping, biting, snarling, barking at me," Bogle said.

Bogle said he knows dealing with violent dogs is a regular part of the experience of most postal workers, but that doesn't mean he has to like it.

"That's my job. ... Rain, sleet, snow, dogs."
