Gessler's Campaign Finance Rules Challenged

DENVER (AP) -- A watchdog group is challenging the Colorado secretary of state's ruling that political candidates don't have to begin filing biweekly primary campaign reports until next July.

The ruling from Scott Gessler came after the legislature moved primaries from August to June.

Ethics Watch filed a lawsuit challenging his ruling on Friday. It's asking a judge to throw out Gessler's rule. Director Luis Toro said it should be up to lawmakers whether to change reporting dates now that the primary timing has changed.

Secretary of state spokesman Rich Coolidge said lawmakers never included campaign finance in their new law and it wouldn't make sense to make new rules requiring it.
