Man Injured By Homemade Explosive Near Rico
RICO, Colo. (AP) - Authorities in southwestern Colorado don't believe a New Mexico man who injured himself with a homemade explosive was trying to harm anyone.
The Dolores County sheriff says 56-year-old Douglas Markey was injured while detonating the explosive in a canyon near Rico on Thursday. He remained hospitalized in fair condition in Durango on Friday.
Sheriff Jerry Martin says more explosive devices were also found in Markey's vehicle and a home in Rico.
Martin says Markey was convicted in 2000 for detonating explosives and appears to simply get a thrill from making things "go bang." Nevertheless, Colorado Highway 145 was closed for several hours after the explosion while the Farmington, N.M. bomb squad removed the devices.
It's not clear whether Markey is from Albuquerque or Hobbs.
