Customers' Bank Info Stolen From Michaels In Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4) - Authorities have a warning for the thousands of people who've shopped at a popular crafts store in Colorado Springs over the past few months. Their bank account information may have been stolen.

Dozens of customers that shopped at Michaels were targeted over the weekend. Thieves tampered with PIN pads and later took money out of ATMs in California.

The threat has been removed, but thieves are still using the information to steal money.

Retired FBI agent Jeff lanza says it is an example of why people shouldn't use debit cards at all.

"A debit card makes you more vulnerable. They can take all the money out of your bank account without your knowledge," lanza said. "It's much better if you use a credit card."

Experts also say that it's important to constantly check bank statements online instead of waiting for the monthly statement in the mail.

It's also a good idea to change the PIN number every few months.
