Mayoral Candidates Out For Final Push To Get Votes

DENVER (CBS4) - Denver elects a new mayor Tuesday and the two candidates were pushing hard to get out the vote.

Residents with a ballot have turn it in by 7 p.m. The latest numbers show only 29 percent of registered voters in Denver have voted.

On the eve of the big day the candidates brought out the big wheels. Chris Romer was tooling around on a fire truck and Michael Hancock was in an RV -- both feeling the wind at their backs.

"I feel very strong going in we've done everything I think that we can possibly do to win the race," Hancock said.

"I'm going to win this tomorrow night by 1,000 votes," Romer said.

But even as they looked ahead to Tuesday, they also reflected on a race defined not by issues, but its tone -- captured in ads.

Hancock says he has no regrets not to go negative. Romer says he also doesn't regret the one attack ad, just ads in general.

"I think we did a little more TV than I would have expected to do," Romer said.

Both candidates say it's come down to the ground game. They've deployed an army of volunteers, and they'll need them with nearly 200,000 ballots still outstanding and just a little more than 24 hours to go.

Both Hancock and Romer said win or lose they will reach out to their opponent and his team after it's all said and done.

It's too late to mail in a ballot. One Tuesday there was a steady stream of people dropping off ballots at the Denver Elections Division on 14th Street. There are 12 other drop off sites around the city. They are very popular because it's very quick. Visit denvergov.org for a list of drop off sites.

"As far as the voter service centers, people don't have to go to the one in their neighborhood. If it's more convenient for a voter to go by the one by their office or wherever, they're able to do that also," Alton Dillard with the Clerk & Recorder's Office said.
