Court Upholds Prison Sentence In Slaying Of Mother

CASTLE ROCK, Colo. (AP) -- A court has upheld a sentence of life in prison with no chance of parole for a Colorado man convicted of killing his mother when he was 16.

Prosecutors say the court Friday resentenced 29-year-old Nathan Ybanez to life without parole for the 1998 murder of his mother, Julie Ybanez. He was convicted of beating and strangling his mother in their Highlands Ranch home.

Ybanez appealed, claiming inadequate representation because his attorney didn't present evidence of abuse by his father. Officials say the court has concluded there was no evidence of physical abuse by either parent.

Ybnanez was originally sentenced weeks before his 18th birthday under a law requiring a mandatory life term with no parole.

A friend of his is also serving life in prison for the killing.
