Newborn Abandoned In Sink At Catholic Church

DENVER (CBS4)- Police in Denver are searching for a woman who just gave birth and abandoned her newborn. The infant was left in a bathroom sink at St. Dominic's Catholic Church Friday at about 8:10 p.m. during a Lent service.

The newborn was rushed to a Denver hospital. Police would not disclose the baby's condition or whether it was a girl or a boy.

Officers are trying to locate the mother since she just gave birth and may need medical care. Police are concerned for the mother.

The incident is being investigated by the child abuse unit because this case does not classify as a Safe Haven situation since the mother did not turn over the child to a person. However, police have not said what, if any, charges may be filed in the case.

In Colorado, the Safe Haven law says a parent may take their unharmed infant to any hospital or fire station and hand it to an employee there, no questions asked.
