Officers approached vehicle near the apartments when they heard a gunshot. They say additional shots were then fired.

Police say the officer and the woman hurt were shot but will recover from their injuries.

The Aurora Police Department said officers did everything right.

"What the officers did was brave. They performed a hostage rescue and that's one of the most difficult things to do in our line of work. They knew what they were going up against. They decided to go forward and try to rescue these two hostages," said Aurora Police Det. Bob Friel.
