Hickenlooper Says State Employees Must Sacrifice

DENVER (AP) -- Gov. John Hickenlooper says state employees and contractors will have to make more sacrifices as the state grapples with continuing economic difficulties.

Hickenlooper says he knows state employees are unhappy with cuts to their pensions and no one likes working several years without a raise, but many people are without jobs and state government will have to be lean. He said doctors and others who receive tax dollars are also unhappy that state funding has been cut.

The state Legislature recently wrapped up about $400 million in cuts to this year's budget that ends in June and lawmakers are now trying to find more than $1 billion more in cuts for next year's budget that begins in July.
