House Signs Off On Northern Colorado Emissions Exemption

DENVER (AP) - Bucking advice from Democrats and environmental groups, Colorado's Republican House has signed off a plan to waive vehicle emissions inspections in two northern Colorado counties, Larimer and Weld.

Those counties are not required by federal environmental law to test vehicles, but lawmakers under Democratic control added them to a group of Denver-area counties where the tests are required. The argument was that looming clean-air standards coming from the federal government will force those counties to test anyway in coming years.

But the Republican House gave preliminary approval Monday to a measure brought by a Weld County Republican, Rep. Glenn Vaad. The air bill must go before the House one more time before it heads to the Democrat-
