Family Seeks Apology From Weld County Over Suspect's Death

WELD COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4)- Death threats have been made to the family of a man seeking an apology over how they say his situation was handled. Reuben Reyes' family claims police in Weld County used excess force and showed disregard for his life.

Reyes reportedly killed a Weld County deputy in November 2010 after a car chase. Reyes reportedly took Deputy Sam Brownlee's gun during a struggle and shot the deputy.

An Evans police officer then shot Reyes. Attorney Michael Evans said there is reason to believe police should have done more to save Reyes' life.

"Everybody knew he had 3 bullet holes in his back from a 9 mm, lying in a pool of blood, his own blood, it's a huge pool of blood, like it's no big deal," said Reyes' family attorney Michael Evans. "They knew he wasn't dead because they handcuffed him. You're not going to handcuff a dead person."

Reyes' family said they would give up $250,000 in damages in exchange for an apology from Weld County Sheriff's Office. Sheriff John Cooke is not commenting on a notice to file a claim against him.

A decision to file a lawsuit may come by May 10.
