Ft. Collins Police Chief Retires

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP)- The Fort Collins police chief is retiring after 14 years in the position, a move that took some colleagues by surprise.

Dennis Harrison's decision came after meetings with City Manager Darin Atteberry.

Atteberry declined to say whether he ordered Harrison to step down. Harrison says there is "nothing terribly sinister" about the move.

Mayor Doug Hutchinson says he won't comment on what he calls a personnel matter.

Harrison is 57. He said in an e-mail to the staff that he hopes to remain in Fort Collins.

It's not clear when Harrison's last day will be. Atteberry says the search for a new chief will take three to six months. He says an interim chief will be chosen from within the department.
