Drivers Face Sloppy Roads, Slow Commute

DENVER (CBS4) - Sub-zero temperatures in the Denver metro area made for slick road conditions on Tuesday afternoon.

One driver said that driving was a real challenge.

"It was pretty rough to tell you the truth, especially on the side streets," John Kyed said.

Colorado Department of Transportation plows tackled the highways. About 80 plows were out in total. Denver Public Works deployed 68 plows to clear only the main streets.

"Main roads aren't too bad it's just so cold it's not melting," driver Chris Purcell said.

Despite the icy temperatures, Public Works said not enough snow fell for them to tackle the side streets. That caused problems for drivers.

"I had to chain up in order to get into work. I was a little panicked," Kyed said.

Purcell spun his wheels on Ogden. He finally escaped after CBS4 anchor Tom Mustin helped push him out.

Road crews worked through the night preparing for the Wednesday morning rush hour.

All drivers were advised to drive with caution.
