Possible Charges After Children Were Wandering Alone

THORNTON, Colo. (CBS4) - Thornton Police found the mother of two children who were wandering around a neighborhood Friday afternoon.

The two young children were going door to door in the Montair Apartment Complex at 8901 N. Grant Street about 3:46 p.m. They were not dressed for the weather.

Officers searched the apartment complex, but initially were unable to locate where the children live, their parents or responsible guardians. Their mother, Calean Nicol Hickey, 33, was found in the apartment complex. Police are investigating the circumstances.

"I don't' know the details and the officers are sorting through the details that they gathered from their mother," Matt Barnes with Thornton police said. "But obviously they felt that it rose to the level where she could be arrested for investigation of child abuse."

The little boy, about 4 years old, has short brown-blond hair and was wearing blue and red snow boots, blue, red and yellow pajama bottoms with pictures of cars on them and a green t-shirt with "Alvin and the Chipmunks" on the front. He possibly goes by the name of "Preston."

The little girl is about 2-years-old. She has shoulder-length brown hair, and was wearing pink and white snow boots, purple pants, no shirt and pink earrings.

The children were taken into protective custody and are currently in the care of the Adams County Department of Social Services.
