CDOT Study Shows Mixed Reaction To Zipper Lanes

DENVER (CBS4) - A proposal to add zipper lanes to Interstate 70 is getting mixed reaction in the high country.

A Colorado Department of Transportation study shows adding a 13-mile reversible lane in Clear Creek County would cost at least $24 million. Supporters say it would help ease traffic on busy ski weekends by creating a third eastbound lane.

The technology uses a special truck that grabs a temporary median and moves it over to create an additional lane.

A spokeswoman for the I-70 Coalition says they're open to the idea but worry about some of the consequences.

CDOT says it's not sure how they would pay for the experiment and aren't sure if the time saved would be worth the cost.
