Castle Rock Neighborhood Evacuated After Shooting

CASTLE ROCK (AP/CBS4) - A pregnant woman drove away from her house with her 3-year-old son after her husband shot her at their home Saturday morning, authorities said.

Police in Castle Rock surrounded 40-year-old Trenton Orendorf's home after the shooting was reported at about 8:15 a.m. and the standoff ended after officers stormed the home after dark. A SWAT team was at the home along with local authorities and they deployed tear gas a couple of times while the standoff was going on.

"He's shot out his windows so I think there was enough ventilation that the tear gas wasn't effective," Kim Mutchler, a spokeswoman for the city, said.

Mutchler said Shannon Orendorf, 33, got in her car with her 3-year-old son and the family dog after being shot and drove to her mother's house, also in Castle Rock. She was met there with emergency personnel and taken to a Denver hospital where she was in stable condition.

Mutchler said a previous report that Shannon Orendorf was shot near her face is inaccurate, but she would not specify where she was wounded. Mutchler said she could not provide any more details about Shannon Orendorf and her condition.

Mutchler said about 10 to 15 nearby homes in the Founders Village neighborhood were evacuated and residents were taken to the Castle Rock police station.

Trenton Orendorf faces charges of first-degree assault and domestic violence. Two court appearances were delayed Monday because attorneys said he wasn't mentally capable of being present.
