Bronco D.J. Williams Was Warned: Don't Drive

A bar manager warned Denver Broncos linebacker DJ Williams not to drive shortly before he was arrested on suspicion of drinking and driving in November, according to information gathered in a CBS4 Investigation.

Denver Police have not released many details about what happened after officers stopped the 28 year old player.

But according to multiple law enforcement sources familiar with the case against Williams, the 28-year-old linebacker admitted to police he consumed about three drinks at a bar before he was pulled over Nov. 12 at about 2:40 a.m. in the 900 block of Broadway.

Police initially stopped Williams for driving without his headlights on. He told Officers that a bar manager had warned him not to get behind the wheel.

Williams was driving a Hummer and was carrying a Florida driver's license.

CBS4 has learned Williams agreed to do voluntary roadside sobriety maneuvers but performed poorly on several of the tests. He initially agreed to take a blood test, but later changed his mind and refused to take a blood or breath test, according to two sources familiar with the case.

Williams also admitted to police that he had a previous drinking and driving case. In September of 2005, he was arrested in Douglas County for DUI.

Williams' lawyer, Harvey Steinberg, declined to comment on the CBS4 report.

The Denver District Attorney's Office said Williams will likely appear in court again in January.

If Williams is found guilty or pleads guilty to a second alcohol related offense, he faces a mandatory ten days in jail according to the Denver D.A.'s Office. That time can be served in home detention.
