Xcel Energy Day Of Service

CBS4 has partnered with Xcel Energy to provide nine different wildland restoration projects on the Day of Service on Saturday, Sept. 7, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The projects include:


Wildlands Restoration (Volunteers 6 years of age and older will be helping to collect a specific species of native plant seed. Trained leaders will show participants what the needed seed looks like and how to spot non-native, look-alike seeds. Volunteers will receive feather light seed bags to aid in their collection. This is a relaxing, slow-moving activity.)

Colorado Fourteeners Initiative (Volunteers 14 year of age and older will be performing trail maintenance and alpine tundra restoration on Quandary Peak, one of Colorado’s 54 Fourteeners.)

Denver Parks & Recreation (Volunteers 9 years of age and older will be helping mulch trees, remove shrub beds, weed perennial beds, paint, and edge sidewalks.)


Town of Erie Parks & Recreation (Volunteers 12 years of age and older will be building a new mountain bike trail by digging the trail, packing dirt, raking weeds, moving and relocating rocks, and building a few wooden features.)


Jefferson County Open Space (Volunteers 8 years of age and older will help promote healthy forest development by manually trimming tree seedlings in areas of overgrowth and established fire-breaks. Volunteers will also be able to participate by collecting the trimmings)


City of Greeley Trails and Open Lands (Volunteers of all ages will engage in general trash pickup, large rock and concrete debris collection, Russian Olive Tree removal, string trimming, and vegetation removal from soft surface trails.)

Colorado Trout Unlimited (Volunteers of all ages will engage in river beautification and habitat clean up along three miles of Cache la Pourde River near Greeley. Volunteers will participate by removing trash and invasive plant species in the river and along the riverbank.)

Highlands Ranch

Highlands Ranch Metro District (Volunteers 13 years of age and older will engage in beautification through shrub planting and mulching along a prominent city entry.)

The Coalition for the Upper South Platte (Volunteers 12 years of age and older will participate in wildlife restoration efforts in the Hayman Burn Scar area. Volunteers will help with re-vegetation of hill slopes; reseeding with native vegetation; harvesting and transplanting willows or pines; and/or installing jute matting, erosion control structures or log fencing to protect sites of restoration.)
