Top Ways To Celebrate "Pi" Day (March 14) In Denver

Time to get your nerd on. It's Pi Day, which means it's March 14, a time to get a little nerdy, a little scientific and a little mathematical. Or just enjoy some really good pie. For those that don't know, Pi is the ratio of the circumference of a circle to the diameter, or 3.14. No matter how you decide to celebrate the day, be sure to involve the family and see who can recite Pi to the furthest digit. To start you off, Pi is 3.1415926535.

What better way to celebrate the day than to watch the movie? The 1998 film is definitely for mature audiences, but it is a fascinating look at a paranoid mathematician that is searching for patterns to predict behavior of the stock market and the key for all existence. “Pi” won the several awards including the Sundance Film Festival Directing Award for director Darren Aronofsky and the Florida Film Critics Circle Awards for Newcomer of the Year. Rent the film and grab some Pi-worthy snacks. How about some pineapple, pizza or even some paella? Or make it a double feature and then rent “A Beautiful Mind” or another mathematical-themed flick.

Make it a healthy Pi Day and go for a 3.14-mile walk or run around one of Denver's most beautiful parks. Why not grab a few friends and race it, or make it a fun run for the whole family? The best part is that Washington Park is not a perfect 3.14 miles around, so you even get to do math to figure out exactly how many times you'll need to circle the park to get to the magic number. To start you off, the perimeter of the park is 2.35 miles around, so just one time around the park, plus another .79 miles around and you'll hit 3.14. To make it a bit easier, you may want to grab a pedometer to help you measure your distance.

There is no better day of the year to indulge in some delicious pie. Okay, maybe Thanksgiving or Christmas rivals 3/14 for pie-worthy holidays, but it's at least in the top three days of the year. Check out Granny Scott's Pie Shop, one of the best pie shops in all of Colorado. From fruit pies to cream pies and even sugar-free pies and pot pies, there is something for every pie-loving palate. Be sure to try it's Old Fashioned Pecan Pie, which won first place at the National Pie Championships in the Super Gourmet Nut Division. In fact, while you are there, grab a slice to eat but then bring some more home for later. You'll be glad you did.

Another way to honor Pi Day is to immerse yourself in all the science education you can find. So head over to the incredible Denver Museum of Nature and Science to browse the museum, learn a lot and get your inner nerd on. While you are there, visit the Space Odyssey on the first level and learn all about the cosmos with plenty of hands-on exhibits and demonstrations. Then head over to the Planetarium and catch an amazing film or two on black holes, the cosmic journey or any other great scientific flick. So this may not be the most educational stop on the Pi Day tour, but it is one of the most delicious. Pi Kitchen + Bar is a great downtown restaurant that serves a variety of local and global cuisines. Of course, it also has a great happy hour, starting promptly at 3:14 p.m. Monday through Friday. The food, prepared by Chef Greg Cook, is a great fusion and you'll find some truly eclectic and interesting dishes all served with a bit of a math twist. Try the Simple Math Breakfast, the Pi Burger or Pi Wings, and you'll have a seriously delicious Pi Day.
