Cinco de Mayo has long been a tequila-fueled celebration in the United States in honor of Mexico. Historically, May 5, 1862 was El Dia de la Batalla de Puebla (Battle of Puebla), Mexico’s victory over French troops. As May 5 is a Monday, many of Denver’s top Mexican restaurants are honoring Cinco de Mayo beginning Friday, May 2. Saludos!

Richard Sandoval’s La Biblioteca (next door to Zengo) offers a rare and extensive tequila selection that has been a hit with locals. Offering library cards to chronicle the journey through tequila and special lockers for guests to house their purchases, the restaurant is a shrine to tequila. Cinco de Mayo celebrations will include infusion shots on the house for groups of six or more, $5 margaritas and $3 bites during happy hour from 4 to 7 p.m.

Los Chingones

Downtown Denver hot spots keep migrating north, and Troy Guard’s Mexican restaurant opened in in the “RiNo District” earlier this year. The margarita selection includes organic ingredients, fresh juices and all mixes made in-house. There is a daily taco happy hour that offers $2 tacos from 4 to 6 p.m. that will be a smart accompaniment to the Cinco de Mayo celebrations.

The Matador
3496 W. 32nd Ave.
Denver, CO 80211

The Matador is a local favorite in the charming Highland’s Square neighborhood. The restaurant offers fresh Mexican and Tex Mex favorites along with a curated selection of more than 100 tequilas. With décor reminiscent of a Mexican hacienda and cozy bar seating around a fire pit, Cinco de Mayo revelers will be flocking to its daily happy hour from 4 to 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. Check out the “Fresh Sheet” on the restaurant’s website at the beginning of May for Cinco de Mayo specials.
