Best Salads In Denver

In some ways -- salads play out like burgers in the restaurant game in the Mile High City -- a salad is a salad, unless you get a lousy one, in which the salad is a major error at the restaurant. Here are a few that have served me well.

Sweet Tomatoes

Price: $$

Sweet Tomatoes is part of the Soup Plantation company, a salad bar and soup chain that works well, even though it's sort of a gigantic buffet kind of layout. You'll wander through the cafeteria line, choose from a wide variety of greens, veggies, add-ons and dressings, then pay and try to find a table. It's usually not bad other than during soccer season when the games have just ended and there are kids everywhere. After you sit, you also have a choice of six soups that change on a regular basis. The chili and the potato/bean varieties are usually quite good. Muffins, breads, pizza like concoctions and soft-serve ice cream are also available.

Price: $/$$

Mad Greens has a wide variety of salads for a very good price. This is, as far as I can tell, a local concern. I like local concerns, especially when they put this much time and effort into their menus and pricing. Try the Mad Molly Brown, the Van Gogh or the Tutankhamun. Or mix and match. It's your call.

Price: $/$$

I've enjoyed The Sandwich Board salad bars over the years because of the wide variety of fixin's and dressings. Salads are priced by the pound. I can usually get clear for under $10 – which makes me feel economically wise.

Denver, CO 80211

Price: $/$$

For several years the Masterpiece Deli on Central Street has been offering the same delicious four specialty salads (the Cobb, Greek, Spinach and Arugula) in addition to its very tasty sandwiches. The Arugula with its candied walnuts, high quality blue cheese and perfectly distributed red wine vinaigrette is best, but the other three are all worth trying, too.
