Amtrak will stick with its existing New Mexico route of the Southwest Chief passenger train, according to the company.
As the first Ski Train in six years pulled out of Denver’s Union Station, a conductor checking his smartphone read out a report that traffic was already stop-and-go on the highway to the mountains.
All 400 tickets were sold within 12 hours for a one-day, roundtrip ski-train excursion from downtown Denver to Winter Park, according to spokesmen for the resort and Amtrak.
A $12.5 million federal grant will pay for urgent repairs on the route of Amtrak’s Southwest Chief in western Kansas and eastern Colorado, but funding for upgrades in southern Colorado and New Mexico remains uncertain.
Amtrak service has returned to Union Station and developers hope the site will eventually be a transportation hub for the entire region.
