Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnel
The Colorado Department of Transportation has begun closing Interstate 70 as workers start to install a $25 million fire suppression system in the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnels.
The Twin Tunnels on Interstate-70 near Idaho Springs could be getting a new name. Lawmakers want to name them the “Veterans Memorial Tunnels.”
The Colorado Department of Transportation says nearly 10.9 million vehicles traveled through the Eisenhower Tunnel on Interstate 70 in 2013, up from 10.7 million the year before.
The Eisenhower Tunnel will soon be safer for drivers thanks to a new fire suppression system that will be installed.
Colorado highway managers say that toll lanes on Interstate 70 between Denver and the mountain resorts are probably on the way.
