CBS4 LAUNCHES COLORADO’S FIRST MOBILE WEATHER LAB
Denver – (Feb. 1, 2013) CBS4, KCNC-TV—Denver, in partnership with Colorado Chevy Dealers, announced today that the station will launch a new mobile weather lab, Colorado’s first and most technologically sophisticated moving weather station, on Super Bowl Sunday.
Following the launch on Feb. 3, 2013, viewers will see CBS4 reporter Justin McHeffey, along with other reporters and photographers, covering major news from the mobile weather lab on CBS4 This Morning weekdays from 5 a.m. – 7 a.m.
“This is a really exciting new addition to our news team,” CBS4 News Director Tim Wieland said. “The mobile weather lab is the first vehicle in the state that can travel anywhere and broadcast live weather data instantly giving our reporters and photographers the ability to cover Colorado’s extreme weather conditions including tornadoes, fires, blizzards and hail storms from even very remote locations so that viewers can have the most up-to-date and accurate reports.”
The CBS4 Mobile Weather Lab is housed inside a new 2013 Chevrolet Suburban ¾-Ton that has been modified for off-road driving. The lab is loaded with some of the newest technology in the television industry offering in one mobile live truck more technological capability than all the TV station’s current live broadcast trucks combined.
Some of the unique features of the CBS4 Mobile Weather Lab include the ability to measure wind speed, wind chill factors, precipitation, barometric pressure and solar intensity. Instant updates of current conditions while on the road, during a live broadcast, can be had with the touch of a button. The vehicle can transmit live broadcasts three different ways, via microwave, satellite and bonded cellular technology. Reporters and photographers can even capture scenes on the way to a live broadcast and share this footage with viewers by simply downloading images through their cell phones.
