FORT COLLINS, Colo. (CBS4) – An autopsy will be done Wednesday morning on a teenager who was found floating face down in a pond in Fort Collins.

The boy’s body was pulled from the Westfield Retention Pond on Seneca Street Tuesday morning.

Rescue crews performed CPR on the teen but it was too late.

Neighbors watched as the body was pulled from the water.

“I didn’t know how long he was in the water but it certainly didn’t seem like he was going to make it,” one neighbor said.

“He wasn’t moving he didn’t have a pulse you could tell they were checking his pulse,” another neighbor told CBS4.

Police said there were no signs of foul play in the drowning.

The name of the victim so far hasn’t been released.

DENVER (AP) – The Hallmark Channel says it will film a television series in Telluride this summer, and state officials credit a revamped film incentives program for bringing the show to Colorado.

Gov. John Hickenlooper joined officials from the channel and lawmakers in making the announcement Tuesday. The series “When Calls the Heart” is supposed to be set in a 19th century coal town.

Hickenlooper says it’s the first television series filmed in the state since 1991. Lawmakers who support more robust tax incentives for film production have argued Colorado has lagged behind other states with higher tax credits.

Filming begins July 22.

The Denver Post reports the Colorado Economic Development Commission agreed to make $2.7 million in tax rebates available to the series.

DENVER (CBS4) - Tuesday afternoon strong storms blew up just east of downtown Denver and although Denver didn’t see much more than clouds, a tornado touched down at D.I.A. No injuries or damage for the storms, but the terminal was evacuated, some roads to the airport were shut down, and a few flights we kept in a holding pattern or were diverted. All afternoon and early evening a strong line of storms continued moving east with tornado or severe thunderstorm warnings popping up as their eastern trek continued. Lightning, hail, heavy rains and strong winds were also reported. This was our second day of volatile weather over the plains…tomorrow a drier airmass should move in and strong storms should be relegated to just the eastern border areas.

Denver recorded an official high of 85 degrees – and that occurred early – at one minute before noon just before the clouds rolled in. Downtown the high was 88. Tonight the storms will end out east and mostly clear skies will prevail in Denver with an overnight low of 57.

Then for the next several days – in fact, right through the weekend ahead – dry and warm weather settles in. Temperatures will remain above normal: in the upper 80s to around 90, under mostly sunny skies.

The flight landed in Seattle.

“United flight 139 from Denver to Tokyo-Narita diverted to Seattle due to an indication of a problem with an oil filter. The aircraft landed normally and we are working to reaccommodate customers,” United officials wrote.

Nonstop service from Denver to Tokyo on the Dreamliner just started earlier this month.

Colorado leaders hailed the flight as one that opens new doors to trade, and one that would bring approximately 30,000 new visitors each year. They said it would create 1,500 jobs, while opening new markets.

Marc Allen Herklotz, 52, and Robin Lauran Herklotz, 50, were killed. They were found in their car in a garage.

El Paso County Coroner Dr. Robert Bux and his staff worked with forensic odontologist Dr. Joe Gentile to make the positive identification.

El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa said earlier the couple had been planning to leave the area. The couple lived at 6720 Jicarilla Drive.

“We extend our deepest sympathy to the family and friends they leave behind,” the coroner stated in a prepared statement.

The fire burned more than 500 homes and is 85 percent contained. More evacuees were allowed to return home Tuesday afternoon as firefighters gain ground on the week-old fire.

Investigators are stepping up efforts to figure out how the fire started. They are concentrating on a 40 foot by 40 area but still aren’t saying if it was accidental or set on purpose.

DENVER (CBS4) – Denver International Airport passengers were told to take shelter in airport shelters after a tornado warning went into effect early Tuesday afternoon and a tornado touched down on airport property.

The National Weather Service issued the warning at 2:05 p.m. for the airport’s concourses and terminal as the severe storm moved through. The warning lasted until 2:45 p.m.

Tornado sirens went off all across the city when the tornado was reported and the main road to the airport — Pena Boulevard — was closed for a short time.

People inside the airport had to take shelter in bathrooms, basements and in the underground train tunnels. Rick Berry shared the following photo through Twitter of one such scene:

DIA officials described their evacuation action as follows:

“Per Denver International Airport’s Emergency Operations Plan, sirens sounded on the property and public announcements were sounded in the Terminal and Concourses instructing passengers and employees to shelter in designated shelter locations such as restrooms and stairwells.”

No damage has been reported on Tuesday and there were no reports of injuries.

Nine planes had to be diverted to other airports while the weather warning was in place.

More evacuations were lifted Tuesday morning in El Paso County. Several hundred people were expected to be allowed home, while firefighters continued tackling hot spots in the blaze that started one week ago.

The number of homes lost is now 502, and that number is expected to increase. The wildfire has charred more than 22 square miles and is 85 percent contained.

Residents in the area where the fire started were to be briefly allowed in to survey damage Tuesday afternoon. Authorities don’t believe natural causes are to blame but haven’t elaborated on a possible cause.

CENTENNIAL, Colo. (Denver Business Journal) – Ikea on Tuesday said it will add more solar power panels to the roof of its two-year-old Centennial store, nearly doubling the store’s ability to generate electricity from solar power and creating Colorado’s largest rooftop solar power plant.

The new panels will be installed on the roof in July and are expected to be operational by the fall, the company said.

There were no reports of anyone getting hurt from the storms, but there was some damage reported and there were scattered power outages.

Gov. John Hickenlooper is set to accept the gold during a ceremony Tuesday morning at the Capitol.

About $120,000 worth of donated gold was mined from the Teller County Mine in Cripple Creek and shipped to Florence, Italy, in March.

Sixty-five ounces will be used to re-gild the Capitol dome. Another 10 ounces will be held in reserve for future touchups.

The gold originally put on the dome over a century ago was also mined in Colorado.

Before the gold was sent to Italy officials described the process as follows:

Sixty-five ounces of the pure metal will be sent to Florence, Italy, where it will be rolled into 1/8,000 millimeter tissue-thin sheets of gold leaf that are 3 1/8″ square. The leaf will then be applied to a copper base plate and ultimately to the dome structure. Project managers estimate it will require approximately 140,000 sheets of the leaf to gild the dome, applied at a rate of 50 to 100 square feet per day.

Terry Flanell’s husband and daughter filed the lawsuit last week in federal court in Denver.

It says the companies were producing a pilot focusing on the family’s Colorado Springs business, Dragon Arms. The suit says the opening sequence was to have Dragon Man employees walk through a cloud of smoke, but pyrotechnic devices that were used to create the smoke malfunctioned, and one struck Flanell.

The lawsuit alleges no licensed pyrotechnics operator was on scene for the filming last year.

A phone number for Anthropic wasn’t listed. A Discovery spokeswoman did not return a phone call seeking comment.

Rodney Bretches also pleaded guilty Monday to criminal attempt to commit sexual exploitation of a child.

According to court documents, officers investigating a video of a woman who was secretly filmed while showering found child pornography on Bretches’ computer.

Bretches resigned after charges were filed against him last year. He is scheduled to be sentenced Aug. 26.

The “Shupe Road Corridor” where the worst destruction took place last week is still closed, but there are plans in the works to open it up to residents on Tuesday or Wednesday. People whose homes burned will be able to go through the rubble, begin the grieving process and deal with the reality of the fire, Sheriff Terry Maketa said Monday morning. A total of 483 homes have burned in what is the most destructive fire in Colorado’s history.

Several evacuated areas from the fire are being opened up again, but Maketa said the residents of the Shupe area have had to wait for so long to go home in part because of the investigation that is still taking place inside that area into how the fire started. Two people who have not been identified yet died in the fire.

“We don’t know yet if it’s a crime or not, but we’re going to treat it as it is and preserve every element of that scene as we can. To allow people to go in and trample through and walk around compromises our scene,” Maketa said.

Maketa said they are “zeroing in on the point of origin of the fire” and they are bringing in some equipment that will help in the investigation. The sheriff didn’t say what that equipment was.

Containment of the fire is now at 75 percent, and while there are still some hot spots, safety work by fire crews inside the burn area is becoming just as important. That includes taking down scorched trees that might fall on driveways, roads or homes.

“You don’t see smoke up there. You’re not seeing black smoke, you’re not seeing flames. It gives this false sense that it’s over and done. And although we’re closing out the chapter of the hot aggressive fire we’re starting a whole new chapter of recovery and that is a long, tedious process,” Maketa said.

The cost to date of fighting the fire is $5.5 million.

Police are also on the lookout for looters, burn vandals and people committing other crimes in the evacuated areas. There have been a few incidents reported so far.

Dan May, district attorney for El Paso County, said some homeowners who are returning home might see some damage at their houses. If it’s unclear whether the damage is from firefighters who battled the fire around their homes or possibly from a looter, there’s a hotline that has been set up. That number to call is (719) 390-5555.

May said his office will prosecute anyone in violation of the fire ban that’s in place around the burn area. He said that includes fireworks and cigarette butts out the window.

More than 1,000 families have come to the disaster assistance center in Colorado since it was set up last week.

As some families prepare to go home to the Black Forest Fire burn area they are being urged to get tetanus shots. Health experts say there is so much debris and rough edges surrounding damaged homes in that area that they don’t want an outbreak of tetanus on top of everything else.

Denver Public Schools fired 250 teachers this year, and a third were told they can never work in the district again. Tom Boasberg, superintendent of DPS, said the district has had a so-called “Do Not Rehire” list for years.

The teachers union says they collected 2,600 signatures for a petition against the policy. They say only teachers who have committed egregious, criminal acts should be banned for life.

“This do not rehire blacklisting needs to go,” said former teacher Melissa McKibben outside the DPS administration building on Monday during an organized demonstration of parents, teachers and union leaders.

McKibben is one of the 80 teachers who were given the “Do Not Rehire” designation.

“I would like to know as a parent why each and every single one of these teachers are not rehireable,” said one parent at the demonstration.

The union says they are calling on the board to revise its policy and review the terminations.

“The truth is because of personal preference of one individual. Not the parents, not the students, one principal, I am jobless,” McKibben said.

Boasberg said “this is not about fit.” He told CBS4 the teachers in question have significant performance issues as measured, he says, by many indicators and many individuals.

“We look at these cases very, very carefully. These teachers have been observed by principal, peer, observer, teachers, instructional superintendents,” Boasberg said.

He says the goal is to keep bad teachers from being shuffled from school to school, not protect them.

“We can’t go back to the days when political pressure meant more than performance in who is teaching our kids,” he said.

Still, after mounting pressure, the district has agreed to lift the lifetime ban and make teachers eligible for rehire after three years if they show improvement in another district.

But some say say while the ban may be lifted, the stigma remains.

“A year later this is what a do not rehire can look like — no further teaching jobs,” McKibben said.

Boasberg says the list impacts only 2 percent of all teachers in the district.

Some district officials speculate the timing of the complaints over the policy has to do with a new teacher evaluation system beginning next year. Under the system many more teachers could land on the “do not rehire list.”

The attack happened just before 2 a.m. on Monday close to RTD’s Lamar Station near 13th Street in Lakewood, just a few blocks south of Colfax.

Police say originally a man walked up asking for a cigarette. The assault ended after the husband was pepper sprayed and the woman was stabbed in the back and head.

“The Hispanic male was joined by two other young Hispanic males at that point,” Lakewood police spokesman Steve Davis said. “The man and his wife thought they were getting threatening.”

The woman even had a knife for self defense, but wasn’t able to keep the assault from happening.

“At that point on of the Hispanic males pepper sprayed the husband and another Hispanic male cut the wife or stabbed her in the back,” Davis said.

The woman was taken to a hospital with severe wounds but is expected to be okay.

“(It was) very serious. Serious bodily injury. Even though things are not life threatening that doesn’t mean they’re not serious.”

Lakewood police are puzzled, though, because after asking for a cigarette, no other demands were made.

“There never was an attempt at robbery that we’re aware of. So the motive I’m not sure of,” Davis said.

The female victim found a link between the three suspects.

“I can’t tell you if it was gang related or not. I can tell you that her description was that they were dressed mostly in red. They left on foot.”

Several police squads responded but were unable to find the suspects.

The injured couple was able to make it one block to a fire station where they were provided with medical assistance.

Lakewood police said the suspects are Hispanic males between the ages of 17 and 20. They were described as being 5 foot 6 to 5 foot 11 and they were slim.

They identified the man Monday as 61-year-old Lewis Pollard.

Police say officers tried to pull him over around 12:40 a.m. Saturday, and he was shot while allegedly trying to flee.

Details, including whether Pollard was armed and why officers were trying to stop him, haven’t been released. It wasn’t immediately known how many officers fired their weapons.

Police say a man was using a tow strap connected to a vehicle to pull stumps from the front of a house Monday when the strap disconnected from the stump. The tow strap’s hook shot through the vehicle’s rear window and struck the driver in the back of the head. The vehicle then traveled across the street onto a front porch, striking an elderly man who was sitting there.

Police say the driver was pronounced dead at a hospital. The man on the porch was taken to a hospital but is expected to survive.

Police say they don’t expect to pursue charges.

DENVER (CBS4) – A 23-year-old Colorado man who was part of a church group is facing federal charges of false information and threats after expressing concern about a bomb on a Frontier Airlines flight on Friday.

The suspect, who police identified as Mark Michael Bote, of Thornton, was on Frontier flight 601 from Knoxville, Tenn., to Denver. He is accused of expressing concern to a flight attendant about a bomb being in a backpack.

When the plane landed the aircraft was taken to a remote area of the airport and was searched for several hours. No bomb was found.

Passengers took pictures and video of the incident. Several said the man was acting very nervously and could be heard saying there was a bomb in his backpack.

One passenger, Nick Danneberger took several pictures and video and released them before traveling to Utah.

He said the crew took the backpack from the man, removed it to the back of the plane and insulated it with people’s bags and seat cushions.

The suspect was set to appear in federal court in Denver Monday afternoon to be advised of the charges he faces but the hearing was delayed to Tuesday.

Evacuation orders for the Ward Gulch Fire were lifted late Sunday after lower temperatures and a little moisture helped slow it down.

Fire spokesman Pat Thrasher said the fire was started Friday by a smoldering lightning strike three miles north of Rifle Gap Reservoir.

It also forced the evacuation of campers at Rifle Falls State Park, Rifle Mountain Park and the nearby White River National Forest.

The danger isn’t over yet though.

The National Weather Service says gusty winds and very warm weather will increase the fire danger in parts of western Colorado by midweek.

Teams got help Sunday from the weather as steady rain moved through the densely wooded Black Forest near Colorado Springs in the afternoon.

“Every bit of rain helps the crews mop up. It’s just adding another nail in the coffin,” fire spokesman Brandon Hampton said.

A total of 483 homes have been burned by the 22-square-mile fire, which is 65 percent contained. Crews hope to have it fully under control by Thursday.

With evacuees anxious to return, crews are digging up and extinguishing hot spots, labor-intensive work that’s needed because extremely dry grass and trees could quickly ignite.

Even though the fire was no longer active enough on Sunday to produce a large smoke plume, El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa said it wasn’t safe for people to return home until roads and downed power lines were repaired.

Additionally, the death of two unidentified people trying to flee the fire was still being investigated. Maketa said he was in no rush to have people return to an area that, at least for now, was still being considered a crime scene.

“I’m not going to compromise the evidence by allowing people in too soon,” he said.

Some evacuees outside the burn area have been allowed back home. Those with property in the burn area have returned with escorts to check on their property or to pick up items, but Maketa said some were then refusing to leave once they were done. He urged fire victims to cooperate or risk being arrested.

Trudy Dawson, 59, was at work when the fire broke out Tuesday and quickly spread in record-breaking heat and strong winds. Her 25-year-old daughter, Jordan, who was on her way from Denver to visit, spotted the smoke, called her mother and went to the house.

With only 30 minutes to evacuate, she only had time to find a family cat and to open a corral gate so the horses could flee.

Jordan and two adult siblings went to the property the next day with a sheriff’s escort and found the horses, unhurt, standing in their corral.

“It was just skeletons of vehicles and ash everywhere. It’s haunting. It looks like it’s right out of a horror movie,” Jordan Dawson said.

It’s unknown what sparked the blaze, but investigators believe it was human-caused and have asked for help from the state and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives as they sift through the ash.

It’s only a few miles away from the state’s second most destructive wildfire, the Waldo Canyon Fire, which burned last summer.

The memory of that fire may have made residents especially appreciative of firefighters. About 1,000 people turned out to line the road and cheer firefighters as they returned from lines Saturday night, fire spokesman Brandon Hampton said.

Some of the aircraft used to fight the Black Forest Fire and other Front Range fires have been moved to fight a nearly 500-acre wildfire near Rifle Falls State Park in western Colorado. That fire erupted Friday from a smoldering lightning strike the day before, spokesman Pat Thrasher said. The residents of 12 homes were ordered to leave along with campers in the park as well as Rifle Mountain Park and the nearby White River National Forest.

Crews were closer to containing other wildfires that broke out around the same time as Black Forest. In Canon City, 50 miles to the southwest, a fire that destroyed 48 buildings at Royal Gorge Bridge & Park was 85 percent contained and the park’s scenic railroad was running again. A lightning-sparked fire in Rocky Mountain National Park had burned nearly 500 acres and was 60 percent contained.

The battle against the blaze that has destroyed nearly 500 homes continues, and police are on the lookout for looters, burn vandals and people committing other crimes in the areas closed to the public.

“We know there is a very small isolated group that may put their greed ahead of the loss of our our friends and neighbors in this community,” said Dan May, district attorney for the region, on Monday.

El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa talked with CBS4 about the particular crimes. He said they have reports of several crimes. So far four homes have been found to be looted.

Maketa also talked about having a tremendous amount of resources to protect the properties from vandals.

“So when we look at the vast expanse of area that has been evacuated, the number of streets and residences that have been patrolled, I think the numbers are fairly low and I’m pretty happy with it,” Maketa said. “We are pursuing each of those cases and I know without a doubt the district attorney is going to take them all very, very seriously.”

Law enforcement will continue to patrol the evacuated areas as long as the evacuation orders are in effect, although more and more evacuations are now being lifted with the fire at 75 percent containment.

On Monday in a news conference Maketa said he spent time in the evacuated areas the night before and he was “impressed with the law enforcement activity.”

“We had talk over the radio last night about somebody wandering into the evacuated area on an ATV. There must have been 10 law enforement officers on it. There was red and blue lights everywhere. It was a great scene,” Maketa said.

May said his office plans to prosecute anyone found looting “to the maximum extent of the law.”

Last month, two looters from the Waldo Canyon Fire, which burned nearby in Colorado Springs, were sentenced to 72 years and 48 years in jail respectively.

The largest is the West Fork Fire, which was estimated to be burning on 1,700 acres in the Weminuche Wilderness on Sunday. The nearby Windy Pass Fire, southwest of Wolf Creek Pass, is burning on about 100 acres.

The state health department says smoke could move into South Fork, Del Norte, Saguache and the Rio Grande National Forest through Monday evening. It says the very young, the elderly and those with respiratory illnesses should stay indoors if moderate to heavy smoke develops.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4) – As some families prepare to go home to the Black Forest Fire burn area they’re being urged to get tetanus shots.

Health experts say there is so much debris and rough edges surrounding damaged homes in that area that they don’t want an outbreak of tetanus on top of everything else.

“The sheriff has allowed me in there. I’ve seen places where homes are in fine shape, but buildings have been destroyed. I would anticipate that homeowners are probably going to start that cleanup themselves,” said Dennis Hisey, El Paso County Commissioner. “We want to make sure if you puncture you’re skin in some manner, just a scrape from a piece of tin, that you’re safe and you’re not going to be contracting tetanus.”

Black Forest residents and volunteers helping in that area are urged to get their tetanus shot at the Disaster Relief Center.

The labor-intensive work is necessary because extremely dry grass and trees could quickly ignite if wind stirs up hot spots in the densely wooded Black Forest near Colorado Springs.

Firefighters did get some help from the weather as steady rain moved through the area Sunday afternoon. But that weather came with some lightning, which sparked a small grass fire near one home.

“Every bit of rain helps the crews mop up. It’s just adding another nail in the coffin,” fire spokesman Brandon Hampton said.

Nearly 500 homes have been burned by the 22-square-mile fire, which is 65 percent contained. Crews hope to have it fully under control by Thursday.

Even though the fire was no longer active enough on Sunday to produce a large smoke plume, El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa said it wasn’t safe for people to return home until roads and downed power lines were repaired.

Additionally, the death of two unidentified people trying to flee the fire was still being investigated. Maketa said he was in no rush to have people return to an area that, at least for now, was still being considered a crime scene.

“I’m not going to compromise the evidence by allowing people in too soon,” he said.

Some evacuees outside the burn area have been allowed back home. Those with property in the burn area have returned with escorts to check on their property or to pick up items, but Maketa said some were then refusing to leave once they were done. He urged fire victims to cooperate or risk being arrested.

Trudy Dawson, 59, was at work when the fire broke out Tuesday and quickly spread in record-breaking heat and strong winds. Her 25-year-old daughter, Jordan, who was on her way from Denver to visit, spotted the smoke, called her mother and went to the house.

With only 30 minutes to evacuate, she only had time to find a family cat and to open a corral gate so the horses could flee.

Jordan and two adult siblings went to the property the next day with a sheriff’s escort and found the horses, unhurt, standing in their corral.

“It was just skeletons of vehicles and ash everywhere. It’s haunting. It looks like it’s right out of a horror movie,” Jordan Dawson said.

It’s unknown what sparked the blaze, but investigators believe it was human-caused and have asked for help from the state and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives as they sift through the ash.

It’s only a few miles away from the state’s second most destructive wildfire, the Waldo Canyon Fire, which burned last summer.

The memory of that fire may have made residents especially appreciative of firefighters. About 1,000 people turned out to line the road and cheer firefighters as they returned from lines Saturday night, fire spokesman Brandon Hampton said.

Some of the aircraft used to fight the Black Forest Fire and other Front Range fires have been moved to fight a nearly 500-acre wildfire near Rifle Falls State Park in western Colorado. That fire erupted Friday from a smoldering lightning strike the day before, spokesman Pat Thrasher said. The residents of 12 homes were ordered to leave along with campers in the park as well as Rifle Mountain Park and the nearby White River National Forest.

Crews were closer to containing other wildfires that broke out around the same time as Black Forest. In Canon City, 50 miles to the southwest, a fire that destroyed 48 buildings at Royal Gorge Bridge & Park was 85 percent contained and the park’s scenic railroad was running again. A lightning-sparked fire in Rocky Mountain National Park had burned nearly 500 acres and was 60 percent contained.

In New Mexico, crews were trying to protect homes in a historic mining town from a 35-square mile wildfire that had prompted 26 people to leave their homes.

Weld County sheriff’s deputies and investigators responded to the residence located near the intersections of County Road 91 and Highway 34 in eastern Weld County at approximately 8 p.m. Saturday.

“An emergency call was placed that indicated that a person had allegedly been killed by gunfire, although the details of the incident were unclear,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

Investigators were conducting interviews and processing the scene. They say the public is not in danger.

DENVER (CBS4) – Elitch Gardens celebrated Father’s Day with a massive game of musical chairs.

Fifty dads battled it out for prizes that included season passes to Elitch Gardens, Hudson Gardens summer concert tickets, goodies from Honey Smoked Fish Company and more.

KOSI 101.1′s morning host Murphy Huston emceed the event.

The park also introduced a new lineup of programming and shows that started Sunday. The new live shows include “Cirque Conjure,” the “Do Right Duo,” the “Raptor Project,” “Professor Storm,” and “Sassy Sally.”

Firefighters are making progress on the Big Meadows Fire burning in Rocky Mountain National Park. The fire is 60 percent contained and has burned nearly 500 acres. The blaze is burning in a remote area of the park that doesn’t have any structures. Some trails are closed but the park remains open to visitors.

On Sunday a firefighter battling the Big Meadows Fire was taken the hospital for a medical emergency, which wasn’t related to the fire. The firefighter’s condition is unknown.

The West Fork and Windy Pass fires are now being managed as the “West Fork Complex.” There was significant growth in both fires overnight. The West Fork Fire has more than tripled in size, growing to more than 1,700 acres. The Windy Pass Fire also grew to more than 100 acres. Firefighters were working on structure protection Sunday with helicopters making water drops.

The fire burning in Dinosaur National Monument has grown to 370 acres. There is no threat to structures and fire crews are letting the fire burn for the most part. They say fire provides natural benefits like fuel reduction, returning nutrients to the soil and improving wildlife habitat and forage. Lightning started several smaller fires which grew into one larger fire. Visitors to the park may experience smoke but the park is open.

A wildfire burning north of Rifle seems to be slowing down. Lower temperatures and a little moisture helped lessen the intensity of the Ward Gulch Fire on Sunday. Fire spokesman Pat Thrasher said the fire, started Friday by a smoldering lightning strike, is now estimated to be burning on 485 acres. It’s 60 percent contained.

No houses were immediately threatened by the Ward Gulch Fire but the residents of 12 homes were ordered to leave, along with campers at Rifle Falls State Park, Rifle Mountain Park and the nearby White River National Forest.

The danger isn’t over yet at the Ward Gulch Fire, however. The National Weather Service says gusty winds and very warm weather will increase the fire danger in parts of western Colorado by midweek.

Containment of the Royal Gorge Fire has increase to 85 percent. The bridge is expected to reopen soon. The fire has burned more than 3,200 acres since it began on Tuesday.

Mitch Utterback of the Colorado National Guard said Sunday that helicopters from Colorado, Nebraska and Wyoming have returned to their home bases.

The fight against the Black Forest Fire is focused mainly on the ground now as crews stamp out hot spots to prevent flare ups inside containment lines.

The National Guard still is helping secure roadblocks at the fire.

The fire in a rural region northeast of Colorado Springs was 55 percent contained Sunday following huge advances by firefighters in recent days, aided by unexpected rain showers and calmer winds.

Jack and Judy Roe thought their home was among the nearly 500 destroyed but found it standing amid other scorched houses in their neighborhood.

“We’ve been on such an emotional roller coaster over this thinking we had lost everything and then to find out that it’s still there. It was a big relief to us, but I mean, our hearts were breaking for our neighbors,” Judy Roe said. Describing the scene, she said she saw charred piles of what remained of homes, with bricks the only distinguishable feature.

Bob and Barbara Metzger lost their home, while nearby by their SUV, clotheslines and surrounding trees were spared.

“As long as the world around me looks the same, I’ll be fine,” Barbara Metzger said, showing a photo of her burnt home with surviving trees around. “We’ll rebuild.”

Authorities have also gained a clearer picture of a grim landscape in a burn area covering 25 square miles.

El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa said the fire’s destruction has made it difficult for his deputies to assess damage. Deputies have said “it looks like a nuclear bomb went off in some of those areas, and you can’t even recognize whether it was a house or some other kind of structure,” Maketa said. “That is the level of incineration and destruction that took place in some areas.”

The fire exploded Tuesday amid record-setting heat and tinder-dry conditions. Two people have died, their bodies found inside their garage Thursday. Their car doors were open as though they had been about to flee, authorities said.

It’s unknown what sparked the blaze, but investigators believe it was human-caused. So far, it’s cost more than $3.5 million to fight.

On Saturday, worried residents waited for permission to return to their neighborhoods to see the damage. They also worried about potential looters as Maketa tried to reassure them, saying deputies are on patrol.

“We have not let up any of our security efforts,” he said.

The site of the wildfire is only a few miles away from the state’s second most destructive wildfire, the Waldo Canyon Fire, which burned last summer.

The lessons from that fire spurred a quicker response, officials said. When the latest wildfire began in Black Forest, a thickly wooded rural region northeast of Colorado Springs, authorities swiftly evacuated tens of thousands of people from an area larger than the Denver metropolitan area.

White House officials said Saturday that President Barack Obama called Gov. John Hickenlooper on Friday to get an update on conditions and reinforce his commitment to help. The president also expressed his concern for the devastation and gave his condolences to families who have lost relatives.

In western Colorado, more than 200 firefighters and two heavy air tankers were helping fight a nearly 700-acre wildfire near Rifle Falls State Park. It was started Friday by lightning.

Judge Carlos A. Samour Jr. included the estimate in a ruling dated Friday. The ruling granted a defense request to have all prospective jurors fill out questionnaires before they are questioned by lawyers.

James Holmes is scheduled to go on trial in February on more than 160 counts of murder and attempted murder. He’s accused of planning and executing an assault on a packed movie theater in a Denver suburb in July, killing 12 and injuring 70.

He has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity and will undergo a mental evaluation at the state hospital before the trial.

Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4) – The devastation of the Black Forest Fire has come between so many and their animals, but one man was reunited with his horse Sunday morning after he feared the worse.

Thomas Boyle is just one of the thousands forced to abruptly leave home because of the devastating fire. He was forced to leave his horse “Banjo” in a nearby barn. When he came back in the morning Banjo was gone.

Boyle searched high and low for Banjo, looking everywhere he could think of. He had just about given up hope until he spotted a photo online. After a quick drive to a nearby farm, the friends were finally reunited.

“It’s like seeing my kid. I’m so grateful for you guys taking care of him,” Boyle told the Devaneys, who were taking care of Banjo.

“During the night (my wife) had gone out and found Banjo in a pasture about 400 feet around a house that was burning down.” Randall Devaney said. “It’s not very often you see a 240 pound, 6-foot man crying over a horse … the horse world is a really unique world, because if you’re an animal lover it’s impossible to say no to them.”

Thanks to neighbors Banjo had been taken in, patched up, and finally returned home. Aside from the burns and maybe a few haunting memories, Banjo is just fine.

Athletic department finance officials told the Daily Camera they’re expecting a $7.5 million shortfall. It comes as the university is searching for a new athletic director.

Since 2006 the department has made nearly $10 million in severance payments or agreements with former employees. That includes more than $1.5 million paid to former Buffs football coach Jon Embree.

The beach was closed on Wednesday and reopened Friday afternoon.

Police say an 11-year-old girl was walking her dog in the parking lot of Prairie Crossing Elementary School at approximately 8:35 p.m. when a man told her to get into his white four-door Lexus. Police say the man drove away when the girl didn’t respond.

Police are looking for a white male in his mid-50s. He’s described as 5-foot-9, 200 to 230 pounds with a buzz cut and goatee. He was wearing blue jeans and a plaid shirt.

The incident happened during a routine traffic stop early Saturday morning. Police say the man was pulled over for a traffic violation. He then started to run and fired several shots at three officers.

Police returned fire, killing the man.

No officers were hurt in the shooting.

David Hernandez, 41, passed away from his injuries early Saturday morning. Now police are ramping up the efforts to find the driver.

Police admit to being frustrated. They desperately want to find out why someone hit a bicyclist and then for a distance of 1,000 feet dragged the bicycle under the car before finally getting out and removing it.

Hernandez’s bicycle was mangled. His family has pleaded for help.

“We are asking for the public’s help because someone knows who did this,” Hernandez’s brother-in-law Vince Trujillo said.

Hernandez was bicycling home from work last Saturday at 11 p.m.

“Leaving him there to die, I just don’t understand it,” Officer Craig Communal with Westminster police said.

Communal kept Hernandez alive, giving him a fighting chance, by giving him CPR in the middle of the road.

“It’s always difficult to lose somebody, especially in that circumstance and you know it makes me feel I could’ve done more, but I did what I could,” Communal said.

The investigation now turns back to the bicycle. Police believe the impact threw Hernandez 100 feet, and for another 1,000 feet his bicycle was dragged under the hit-and-run driver’s vehicle southbound at the 9900 block of Westminster Boulevard. Police said there’s no chance the driver didn’t know what happened.

“It was definitely wedged under there, and from markings on the bicycle and the roadway we can tell it was wedged under the vehicle, and that’s why we believe they had to get in there and tug and pull it out,” police spokesperson Cheri Spottke said.

One week later, Hernandez’s family and the police are speaking with one voice.

“We need someone with their conscience kind of eating at them to come forward and say, ‘I’m responsible.’ Or, ‘I know who’s responsible for this incident,’ “ Spottke said.

“We know the person who did this is feeling extreme guilt and we ask that you do the right thing and come forward,” Trujillo said.

Police collected car parts, but they’re not sure which ones are from last Saturday night or from previous accidents. But if someone shows them to a car with front-end damage on the passenger side, they say they have the parts to identify the car.

Anyone with information is asked to call Westminster police.

Crowley County Sheriff Miles Clark says the man died of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound after the standoff Saturday.

Clark didn’t release the man’s name but says he was 34 and was wanted on an arrest warrant. Clark didn’t identify the charge in the warrant.

The sheriff says deputies surrounded the house and repeatedly ordered the man to leave. Clark says the man didn’t respond to a negotiator.

Clark says deputies released tear gas into the home before a SWAT team entered and found the body.

Sugar City is about 50 miles east of Pueblo.

One person was injured and taken to the hospital. Four adults and three children living there have been displaced.

Smoke damaged the adjacent unit.

The cause of that fire is being investigated.

DENVER (CBS4) – The 38th annual Pridefest is underway in Civic Center Park.

There are 250 vendor booths and entertainment. There are also several stages offering different kinds of music.

“There’s always a huge turnout for pride here. I think Denver is a great place just because everyone is so loving and welcoming to everyone,” a man at the festival said.

The festival continues all day Sunday along with the Pridefest parade through the streets of downtown Denver.
