The investigation is centering on Doherty High School in Colorado Springs.

The most recent of the alleged incidents was at a Super Bowl party over the weekend. At least two students were involved.

School officials are now contacting parents to let them know about the ongoing investigation.

So far there have been no arrests.

Tests so far show a large number of positive results for tuberculosis. Longmont High School delivered the latest findings to parents on Wednesday. The testing started after one student at the school came down with the disease.

Only one student at Longmont High School has tested positive for active tuberculosis. The other positives have been for what the school says is “latent tuberculosis.” Those students aren’t showing signs of illness and they aren’t contagious, and they can be treated so it doesn’t develop into active TB over time.

The Colorado Department of Health and Environment is working out a plan to test all of the students and staff at the school.

There is very little further information available about the upcoming testing because the school district is referring the media to the county health department. Health officials say they are still finalizing details.

The lone active TB case was reported in December.

Initial tests were just on about a dozen staff and students, then that testing was expanded to another 140 people — 40 percent of whom tested positive for latent TB.

Because those tests showed what the principal calls a “larger than expected number” of latent TB cases, the testing will be expanded to all students, which a couple parents CBS4 spoke with say is a good idea.

“They’ve kept it pretty low-key, which I like because TB scares so many people,” parent Allyson Stauffer said. “It’s a frightening disease and so they’ve kept it very low-key, very calm; there have been no panics, and that’s a really good thing.”

The letter from the principal says health officials plan to test all students and staff over the next several weeks. The letter also emphasizes that latent TB can be treated with antibiotics.

About 5 percent of untreated latent TB cases become active within 2 years.

Health officials say that because latent TB isn’t contagious it is safe for students to attend school and school events as the testing moves forward.

The children are overcoming their disabilities by learning a new sport.

For some of the dozen children in Colorado from Texas, they’d never seen snow, and some haven’t even been able to compete in other sports. But the National Sports Center for the Disabled is giving the kids an opportunity they assumed was impossible, like Lauren Starks, who has no left leg.

“I never thought I’d be snowboarding, but when Scottish Rite called me, I did it, I like it, and now I’m coming back,” Starks said.

Starks’ instructor said he’s only the second person with an amputation up to his hip who actually learned how to snowboard. His instructor said everyone else with that injury just learns to ski.

Starks says he hopes he’s an inspiration to others.

“Somebody else can do it when they look at me, probably,” Starks said.

The other teens who are on the slopes as part of a program from their Dallas-based hospital say the opportunity to ski is beyond rewarding.

“Every time I come here and go back home it’s almost like my confidence level is up and my self esteem is up,” snowboarder Abigail Hernandez said.

Hernandez lost her foot when she was an infant. She’s now made her third trek back to Colorado.

“I really, really like getting to spend time with other kids who are amputees. We all have friends at home but can’t relate the way we can here,” Hernandez said.

The National Sports Center for the Disabled wraps up its season with a big event in March. It’s the 27th annual Wells Fargo Cup and it’s the main fundraiser for the center.

Well, that’s precisely what many folks do physically when the snowflakes fly. They grab a shovel and start lifting and heaving as if someone has a stopwatch timing them. No warmup. No breaks. Lots of hurt.

Let’s put some heart into this first.

Heart attacks account for about 8 percent of snow shoveling injuries, so it’s not the most common shoveling injury, but certainly the scariest. That attack can take place from within the first five minutes of throwing snow to hours after you are done. You simply cannot go from couch potato to the world’s strongest human show removal machine.

As you might imagine, back injuries rank first. Lift, twist, throw. Your spine was not made for that evil triad. Back injuries usually hit early in your snow clearing efforts.

Then come the spills. We see a lot of people who take a digger when out clearing a walk, and it’s a crapshoot as to which part of the body will smack the ground first. Even though spills can happen at any time, the most common time to skid is when you are finished. The path is still a little slick, and your body is dead tired so it won’t support you when you need it most. (Just like most ski injuries happen at the end of the day.)

So besides paying the neighbor kids to do the heavy lifting, what can you do if you’re like me and keep on saying I sure will buy that snow blower next year?

First off, warm up. Not stretch. But warm up. The first 10 minutes of shoveling should be half loads.

Push the shovel as much as possible — avoid the lifting. But if you’ve got to lift, use those quads — don’t bend at the waist.

And if you have to toss the snow to the side, turn your whole body. Don’t twist (unless you like back spasms).

I’m not even going to go down the road of “walk like a duck” — you know you don’t have good footing in slick weather even with great boots. Take it slow and wide.

Then think of what you’d do in the summer. You’d take breaks in hot weather, so do it in cold. Plus, you’d be guzzling fluids. Do that now, too. Yes, you can get dehydrated with all that hard work in freezing temps.

Finally, be a kind person all year. Then you will be well liked … and might be able to get those neighbor kids to give you a hand when the flakes are flying.

Michael Foods, of Minnetonka, is recalling eggs in brine sold in 10- and 25-pound pails for institutional use in 34 states, including: Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, North Carolina, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Jersey, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin and West Virginia.

The eggs carry six brand names: Columbia Valley Farms, GFS, Glenview Farms, Papetti’s, Silverbrook and Wholesome Farms.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says the eggs were produced at Michael Foods’ plant in Wakefield, Neb., and were bought by food distributors and manufacturers. There have been no reports of illness connected to the eggs. But, the company says the eggs have the potential to be contaminated with a strain of listeria that can cause serious infections in those with weaker immune systems.

A Senate committee voted 6-3 Thursday to restore circumcisions as a covered medical procedure for Medicaid recipients. If approved, the change would cost Colorado some $230,000 a year.

The procedure was dropped last year amid complaints that circumcisions aren’t medically necessary and that the money could be better spent elsewhere. Several other states stopped paying for the optional procedure.

Supporters of covering circumcisions argued that the procedure has medical benefits and isn’t purely cosmetic. The bill now heads to the Appropriations Committee.

A Republican bill to repeal Colorado’s health insurance exchange is up for a vote Thursday in a Democrat-controlled Senate committee, where it appears headed to certain defeat. The committee is led by the Democratic senator who proposed the exchange last year.

The same committee voted down a Republican idea to seek a federal Medicaid waiver. GOP leaders have said a federal waiver is crucial to trim health care costs. Democrats have called the waiver idea wishful thinking that could hurt the needy if approved.

The health insurance exchange is unpopular with some Republicans because it is a required element of the federal health care law.

A Colorado House committee was expected to discuss a bill that represents the nation’s toughest regulations meant to keep trans fat away from students, but lawmakers Thursday delayed the hearing without explanation.

The bill would forbid trans fat in cafeteria lunches – but it wouldn’t stop there.

The proposed ban would apply to snacks in vending machines, bake sale goodies and popular “a la carte” items on lunch lines such as ice creams or pizza, requiring any such treats to be prepared without artery-clogging trans fats.

Small amounts of trans fats occur naturally in many meat and dairy products, but most come from partially hydrogenated cooking oil. Many types of cooking fats, such as shortening, are available without trans fat.

Colorado’s measure would not apply to naturally occurring trans fats. But setting the proposal apart from other states with similar restrictions is a provision that extends to before- and after-school hours.

Delaware and California, for example, both ban school food with trans fat, but not at all after-school activities.

Colorado has the nation’s lowest obesity rate, but that percentage is rising among young people.

In 2007, Colorado’s childhood obesity rate was the nation’s third-best. By 2010 it ranked 23rd according to the Colorado Health Foundation, a change researchers attribute to sedentary behavior and a growing childhood poverty rate.

Lawmakers who sponsored the measure, a Republican and a Democrat, said that for Colorado to hang onto its prized leanest-state title the state has to make healthy eating a higher priority for children.

“Colorado is one of the healthiest states but has the one of the highest rates of childhood obesity,” said House Education Chairman Tom Massey, R-Poncha Springs, one of the bill’s sponsors. “So if we’re going to do something about that, this is a step in the right direction.”

The American Heart Association and other supporters of the measure are working to assure skeptical lawmakers that the ban wouldn’t forbid childhood faves such as pizza and french fries.

“You can still have the exact same food,” association lobbyist Susanna Morris said. “You’d have to find different ways of preparing them.”

Colorado’s Department of Education doesn’t have a statewide trans fat standard.

Janelle Asmus, a spokeswoman for the state education department, said a review “found the amount of trans fat in a school meal to be minimal.”

But, Asmus added, the review didn’t include items for sale in vending machines and after-school activities such as bake sales.

The Legislature has not estimated how much the change would cost local schools. The bill would not require changes to school kitchens or food preparation methods.

Colorado’s best-known school nutritionist says the complete trans fat ban is do-able. Ann Cooper, author of the “Renegade Lunch Lady” blog, is in charge of food service at the Boulder Valley district, thought to be the only public school district in the state that is trans fat free.

“We don’t serve convenience food. We don’t serve junk food,” Cooper said. “That’s where the trans fat is. You cook from scratch, it’s not a problem cutting all the trans fat.”

If approved, Colorado’s trans-fat ban would take effect next school year. Supporters say the proposal may be amended to give schools more time to comply, a change they accept. The bill may also be amended to exempt fundraisers from the ban, protecting many sporting-event concessions such as nachos.

Landon Alexander Delaney’s heart wasn’t right — he had a rare defect. If it hadn’t been detected early, he could have gone home from the hospital and turned blue as he struggled to breathe.

But Landon’s heart problem was discovered when his mother got sick.

“I’ve never been so scared in my life,” Landon’s mother Beverly Dobson said.

Landon was born with a congenital heart defect called pulmonary atresia. The valve that connects the heart to the lungs was completely blocked. That meant blood couldn’t flow to get oxygen. It’s a life-threatening condition, but doctors were ready to help.

Dobson was 6 months pregnant when she went to Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center for kidney stones. On a routine ultrasound, high-risk pregnancy Dr. Richard Porreco discovered her baby’s problem.

“They were lucky that she had kidney stones at this time otherwise we wouldn’t have seen this,” Porreco said.

Three months later Landon was born. Two days later he was back in the operating room. Through a tiny heart catheter pediatric cardiologist Dr. David Miller burned a hole in the abnormal valve and then enlarged that opening with a balloon.

But the procedure wasn’t enough. Surgery was then done to place a small tube to bring more blood to the lungs.

Pulmonary atresia is rare — Landon is one in 10,000 in the medical world. But he is one in a million to his mother.

“I feel blessed,” Dobson said. “He’s definitely my miracle.”

The hope is Landon can go home to Sterling in about 2 weeks. His cardiologist at the Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children says his prognosis is excellent.
