Stabbing Victim Identified, Suspect Had 'Death List'

LONGMONT, Colo. (CBS4) - A woman who was stabbed to death at her apartment in Longmont has been identified as Makayla Grote.

The 2016 graduate of Green Mountain High School was found with stab wounds at the Shores Apartments on Airport Road near Highway 66 shortly after 6 p.m. Saturday.

Grote died a short time later at the hospital.

The 15-year old suspect was arrested several hours later and faces a charge of first-degree murder. He is not being identified because he is a minor.

The teen did not appear in court because his defense attorneys waived his first appearance. Before that happened, the judge determined that he should be placed in restraints because he presented a danger to himself and the community.

According to court documents, the teen exchanged "troubling text messages" with Grote's younger sister last month. The texts were reported to police in Lakewood. Apparently the suspect had a "death list" which included the victim's younger sister.

The suspect apparently denied the existence of the list to police. Prosecutors said that the Jefferson County School District was aware of the list.

The victim recently attended Green Mountain High School.

On Saturday, the suspect stopped by the victim's apartment and asked for a jump start on his car. The victim, her sister and mother were at the apartment. The suspect apparently left and went home where he allegedly assaulted his grandfather and threatened his mother with a knife.

He then returned to the victim's apartment and allegedly stabbed Grote with a hunting knife in the head and chest when she answered the door. Grote's sister ran into the bedroom and locked herself inside. The suspect tried to get inside, damaged the door and left.

Lakewood police found him a mile away from the third victim on his list. At his home, police found Molotov cocktails in his room, the death list and a list of tools to carry out the killings.

According to police records obtained by CBS4, the suspect had been reported Friday as a runaway. Records also showed previous charges, including felony menacing.

The suspect remains in custody on no bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday morning.

Grote worked at Colorado National Speedway. They released a statement regarding her death.
