The shooting happened in the 1500 block of Welton Street after a robbery at the ANB Bank near the 16th Street Mall. Several shots were fired.

Officers recovered the weapon along with money from the bank robbery.

Police say no officers were hurt. The officer who fired on the suspect is a male who has been with the department for less than 10 years.

The bank robbery suspect was listed in critical condition as of 2:15 p.m. His death was announced just after 7 p.m. Friday.

Denver Police Chief Robert White says the 16th Street Mall is a safe place thanks to the 20 officers who patrol the mall.

"The goal is to prevent those things from occurring, but when they do occur, fortunately we have officers on the scene that can respond expeditiously," White.

The police activity in the area was causing delays for trains and buses in the area, according to RTD.
