State Trooper, Arapahoe County Deputy Involved In Crash

By Melissa Garcia

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) - A Colorado State Patrol Trooper and an Arapahoe County Deputy were rushed to the hospital with serious injuries after a head-on collision.

The two collided around 5:30pm Saturday, when the deputy and the trooper were each responding to assist the Adams County Sheriff's Office on a call of road rage with a weapon at 80th & Schumacher in Arapahoe County.

Neither made it to the call, however, due to the accident. The two were heading in opposite directions on E. 48th Avenue near Manilla Road when they crashed. E. 48th Avenue is a gravel, country road without any markings.

The trooper, trapped in his unmarked Dodge Charger had to be cut out of the vehicle. He was airlifted to University Hospital where he was said to be in serious condition.

The deputy, who was driving an SUV, was rushed to the hospital by ambulance, also in serious but stable condition.

The Aurora Police Department was investigating the crash.

"It does strike home when a law enforcement officer is injured in the line of duty. So tonight we're asking for the public's prayers for both the deputy and the trooper," said Sgt. Chris Amsler of the Aurora Police Department.

Investigators remained at the scene into the night working to reconstruct the accident. It was unknown who may have been at fault or why the collision occurred.
