Search Continues For Man Wanted In Numerous Crimes

LAKEWOOD, Colo. (CBS4) - Police in Lakewood were assisted by SWAT Monday morning as they searched for a suspect.

Zachary Vela is Department of Corrections escapee wanted for a felony parole violation and numerous other crimes.

Officers rushed to the residence located in the 10000 block of a of Alameda Avenue near Kipling in Lakewood about 9 a.m. Unfortunately Vela got away before officers could arrest him.

Authorities determined Vela, 32, was not at the location at the time of the search.

"What a thing to wake up to," said a neighbor who wished to be identified as Raven. "Cop cars (were) up and down my street."

Vela is suspected in numerous crimes through the Denver metro area and Douglas County, including vehicle theft, burglary and vehicle trespasses.

Vela is believed to be armed and dangerous.

He was last seen in Lakewood just before 1 p.m., driving a stolen red Toyota Tacoma with Colorado license plate VYQ-010.

At the scene of the standoff, police escorted one man out of the home in handcuffs. It is unclear why that man was detained.

No evacuations were ordered in the area during the standoff.

Investigators collected fingerprints and evidence from a maroon sedan at the home near Alameda and Kipling into the night. CBS4 has learned a couple from Lakewood reported it stolen last month.
