DENVER (CBS4)– Firefighters in Denver rushed to a church that was on fire on Wednesday afternoon. One person was injured in the fire.
Fire crews were called to the fire burning at St. Mary’s Jacobite Church located at 3410 W. Walsh Place about 2:15 p.m.
Firefighters say damage to the church is extensive.
A witness said she saw smoke pouring from the windows of the church as the fire burned inside. She also saw the priest limping as he escaped the burning flames.
“He said he had fallen asleep and that he doesn’t know what happened,” said one witness.
The pastor was rushed to the hospital and is expected to be okay.
“It’s terribly shocking to us as a church,” said church board member Munoj Chacko.
When firefighters arrived they found heavy smoke coming from the church.
What caused the fire is being investigated. Investigators do not believe the fire is suspicious.
