World War II Vet Visits Place That Changed The Lives Of Many

DENVER (CBS4) - A World War II veteran CBS4 reported on earlier this week made a stop at Denver International Airport.

Mel Heckman was on his way home to Wyoming after visiting the place that changed his life. Going back to Pearl Harbor was his wish which was granted by the National Wish of a Lifetime group.

Heckman lives in Wyoming but stopped at DIA. He was greeted by airport staff and local veterans.

He says he was amazed at the amount of respect he saw.

"I'm just an ordinary guy. Thousands … literally thousands of people I met. And the respect that they showed for an old-timer is unbelievable," Heckman said.

On Tuesday CBS4 reported on when Heckman remembered trying to save sailors lives when Japan attacked the harbor.

Heckman's family joined him on the trip.
